Using Aichi University Library

Library Hours

Please see the Schedule (Japanese only) for hours and closures.
* Ad hoc operating days and closures are posted on the bulletin board.
* The library will close if official warnings are issued regarding storm wind (rain) and earthquakes.

Entering/Exiting the Library

To enter and exit the library, you need your student ID card, faculty ID card or library card.
Swipe your ID card at the gate to enter or exit.
If you attempt to take material out of the library that hasn't been checked out, the buzzer at the exit will sound and the gate will lock.
Graduates of this university and off campus users (members of the general public, other universities' students) must register to use the library. For details, please refer to Off Campus Users.
* For the time being, members of the general public may only use the Toyohashi Campus Library.

Search

Books and magazines in the library's collection can either be searched for using the online search system or the catalog list.

[Online Search System (ALIS-OPAC)]
Searches can be made for all Japanese books, Western books (some exceptions) and Chinese books received 1987 and later.
The online search system can be used anywhere with an internet connection.

[Catalog List]
Material received 1986 and earlier can be searched for using the catalog list.

The searches cover materials in all 3 campus libraries (Nagoya, Toyohashi, Kurumamichi).
* You will need to apply at the counter if you wish to use books or magazines from a different library.

Borrowing and Renewing

Undergraduates/Junior college students: 10 materials/15 days
Postgraduates students: 30 materials/2 months
Other: 5 materials/15 days
* There are procedures which must be followed to borrow materials. Please present your card (student ID/faculty ID or library card) and carry out the necessary procedures for borrowing.
Materials can also be borrowed at the self-checkout machines.
* You cannot borrow if you have overdue materials.
* Please observe the borrowing terms so as not to inconvenience other users.
* Materials may be renewed only if they are not requested (reserved) by another user.
Please renew materials at the counter.
You can use the self-checkout machines to extend the loan period.

Returning

Please carry out the procedures for returning materials at the counter. These procedures can also be performed at the self-checkout machines. Aichi University students can return books to any of the 3 campus libraries.
* Return procedures cannot be performed at self-checkout machines at the Nagoya campus library. Please drop your materials into the after-hours return chute.

Getting Materials from Other Libraries

Please apply at the counter. Materials take 2 or 3 days to arrive.

Reservations (Applicable to Aichi University students and faculty)

You can reserve the material of your choice if it is currently on loan.
Please consult with the counter if the material you are requesting is on loan for a prolonged period of time. The user will be sent notification to return the material promptly.

Arrangement

Material in the library is arranged by call numbers based on Nippon Decimal Classification (NDC).
Make sure to return any material you have taken from the shelf to its original location.

Photocopying Library Material

You may photocopy library materials.(However this is limited to the scope of the Copyright Act and other related laws)
After filling out the available material photocopying application form, take it to the Reference Counter together with the photocopy.
* The photocopying of material other than library material is not permitted.
Microfilm reader /printers are available at the Nagoya and Toyohashi campus libraries. The cost is 10 yen per page.

Reference Counter (Applicable to Aichi University students and faculty)

The Reference Counter provides information on material for study and research, as well as how to search for material.
If the material you are seeking is not in the library, you can request to borrow it from other universities' libraries or the National Diet Library.
Also, the Reference Counter issues letters of introduction if you wish to use another university's libraries.

Purchase Requests (Applicable to Aichi University students and faculty)

You can request the purchase of material not available at the libraries.
Fill out the purchase application form and submit it at the counter.
You will be notified if your request for purchase has been accepted on the library's designated bulletin board, etc. You will also be informed via this bulletin board when the material is available for borrowing.

Databases (Applicable to Aichi University students and faculty)

There are various databases available.

Nagoya Campus Library

This is the library located at the new Nagoya campus opened in April, 2012. The library features discussion rooms, browsing corners, private study spaces and so on, and is located on Levels 1 through to 3 of the Welfare Building. The library offers an environment that supports various forms of learning.
The Nagoya campus library is available to Aichi University's Open College students as well as faculty and students from other universities.
If you wish to use the Nagoya campus library, refer to Off Campus Users below and perform the necessary procedures. Note that for the time being this library is not available to the general public.

Discussion Rooms (Applicable to Aichi University students/faculty and Open College students)

You must apply to use Discussion Room (1). Please apply at the library counter. Discussion Rooms (2) and (3) are free to use at any time as long as they are not reserved.

Study Booths (Applicable to Aichi University students and faculty)

Please apply at the library counter if you wish to use a study booth.

External Storeroom

The majority of material kept in the former Nagoya campus library's storeroom is now kept in an external storeroom. If you wish to arrange for such material to be sent to the library, please carry out the necessary procedures at the counter.

Toyohashi Campus Library

The Toyohashi campus library is a comfortable learning space featuring a Media Zone, AV corner and more. Adjacent to the Computer Center and Language Study and Research Laboratory, it is the ideal learning environment.

Storeroom

Approximately 600,000 books are stored in this closed-shelf area however these can be used (borrowed) in the same way as open shelf books.
* Some material cannot be borrowed.
Only those who have completed a storeroom guidance course may enter the storeroom. Please see the bulletin board, etc. regarding when these courses will be held.

Group Study Rooms (Applicable to Aichi University students and faculty)

The Group Study Rooms can be used for seminars, joint research and so on. Please carry out the necessary procedures at the counter to use them. However, these rooms are made available as reading rooms during scheduled examination periods.

Kurumamichi Campus Library

The Kurumamichi campus library has been a dedicated library of Aichi University Postgraduate School since 2012.
Only postgraduate students may use this library.

Off Campus Users

<Nagoya Campus Library>
The Nagoya campus library is available to Aichi University's Open College students as well as faculty and students from other universities.
For the time being, this library is not available to the general public.

<Toyohashi Campus Library>
The Toyohashi campus library is available to Aichi University graduates, Open College students, the general public, as well as faculty and students from other universities.
Please carry out the below procedures if you wish to use the library.
* Please travel to the library using public transportation.

<Kurumamichi Campus Library>
This library is only available to Graduate School affiliated persons.

* Please see Access to Each Library for how to access the libraries.

Aichi University Graduates and General Public

Please come to the Reference Counter when you arrive. Fill out the required material s on the Request for Library Usage Form (Japanese only) and submit it at the counter.
If you wish to borrow material, a check will be performed and you will be issued an ID card once registration is complete.
Please understand that we will run a check to confirm whether or not you have been previously enrolled.
* Please present your seal along with your driver license, health insurance card or some other form of personal identification which shows your current address.

You will be able to view and photocopy materials in the library after these procedures are completed. (However this is limited to the scope of the Copyright Act and other related laws)
After you are issued an ID card, you may borrow library material (excluding dictionaries, magazines and other non-circulating material).
Borrowing period: 2 weeks No. of materials: 5
* You must sign and affix your seal to the Request for Library Usage Form to borrow material.

As a general rule, please borrow/return material at the counter of the library where you are registered. Material cannot be borrowed/returned by post.

Material can be sent from other campus libraries, excluding rare books or material in a notably deteriorated state and special collections. Please ask at the counter for details.
Requests for materials to be sent from other campus libraries can only be made from the library where you are registered.
Material cannot be reserved.
The use of databases, CD-ROMs, etc. is limited to members of Aichi University (students and faculty). We ask for your understanding.
Please do not use the power points in the library.

Members of Other Universities

A letter of introduction from your university library is required. Please bring this letter of introduction (ask at your affiliated library for details), fill in the Request for Library Usage Form and submit it at the counter.
Members of libraries part of the Tokai Region University Library Affiliation (Japanese only) do not require a letter of introduction. Please bring your student ID, faculty ID, etc. After carrying out the necessary procedures you will be able to view the library collection and make photocopies within the scope of the Copyright Act. You cannot borrow material.
We may refuse to allow the viewing or photocopying of rare books, etc.
Please request the library of your affiliated university to search their own collection for the materials you are requesting in their collectionwish to access before you visiting our libraries.
We do not allow viewing of material in the Nagoya Campus Library's external storeroom. Thank you for your understanding.

Senior High School Students or Younger

We do not allow senior high school students or younger students to use our libraries. However, for a specific period in the summer vacation, senior high school students may use our libraries. (Excluding the Kurumamichi campus library)

Other

For details, please enquire at the library counter. Because the libraries were designed under the presumption they would not be used by younger children, there are some areas which lack consideration for safety towards children. Therefore, we ask that you refrain from bringing children with you. Thank you for your understanding.
