Features of the Aichi University Libraries

Since commencing a library service in 1947, we have collected over 1.6 million materials and our most notable feature is that, as a reflection of our roots, we stock a large volume of Chinese-related material. The Kansai Collection (formerly owned by former Sumitomo Director General and Minister of Finance, Masatsune Ogura) consists of Chu Ci, published in 1519, as well as several other works from the Ming Dynasty. The Kazan Collection (formerly owned by Kazankai) consists of many rare books by Qing Dynasty scholars, as well as works on former China and the South Manchuria Railway Co., Ltd. Other China-related collections include Takemura Collection, Asakawa Collection, Chinese Academic Exchange Collection and the Chinese-Japanese Dictionary Collection. Our abundant collections have drawn the attention of researchers both on and off campus.

Next, as a general library for social sciences and humanities, not only do we stock the fundamental material, but we also make a point of collecting material from related fields by securing a special budget each year. In our social sciences category, we have purchased many major works including America’s National Reporter System, the All England Law Reports, and OECD publications, as well as the Hansard’s Parliamentary Debates, German corporate history, and the Goldsmiths’-Kress Library (microfilm) and so on. Under humanities, we have the Suganuma Collection formerly owned by Koubei Suganuma, a pupil of Atsutane Hirata which focuses on national learning and waka poetry material, each yearly edition of the World Census of Agriculture and Forestry, the complete set of national census returns, all the major prefectural histories, the complete set of Toji hyakugo monjo (photo edition), Reclam’s Universal-Bibliothek, the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, Penguin Books and more. We have a vast range of literary works for library users.
